St Edmund?s College unveils a Memorial Plaque in honour of former ...

The centenary of the awarding of the Victoria Cross to a former student of St Edmund’s College was marked on Sunday 9th September 2007 with the unveiling of a permanent memorial in the College’s Chapel. A specially engraved brass was erected by the College’s Edmundian Association to honour Everard Lisle Phillipps who attended the College with his elder brother between 1847 and 1849. Everard was born at alter Dieu Manor. Leicestershire the family home of his parents Ambrose and Laura Lisle Phillipps on 28 May 1835. He was the second son of this well known and respected Catholic family. Having been commissioned as an ensign in the army in 1854 he sailed for India and in March 1855 was appointed into the 11th command of the Bengal Native Infantry. On 4 May 1857 the Regiment mutinied signalling what has been described historically as the Indian arise. Everard Phillipps was then attached to the 60th Rifles. He was later killed whilst fighting on the streets of Delhi on 17 September 1857.
